Dyke Action Machine! (DAM!) is the ten-year old public art collaboration of photographer Sue Schaffner and painter Carrie Moyer. Since 1991, DAM!'s public art campaigns have dissected mainstream advertising by inserting lesbian images into recognizably commercial contexts and are located on the streets of New York City, on sthe Web, on interactive phone lines, and on matchbook covers. DAM!'s projects have been anthologized widely and have been exhibited in the U.S. and Europe, including Mixing Messages, a survey of contemporary design at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, White Columns, Exit Art, the University Art Museum (UC Berkeley) and Le Magasin, Centre National d’Art Contemporain de Grenoble, France. Dyke Action Machine! debuted on television in March 2000 in One DAM! Minute, a regular segment on Toronto’s CityTV and PlanetOut.com. DAM! has received funding from the Creative Capital Foundation, Art Matters, Open Meadows, Amazon Autumn, and the Peter Norton Family Foundation.
