Tory Vazquez: Wrestling Ladies

Tory Vazquez is a writer, director, and actor. She has been creating her own and collaborative theater work since 1994 in New York City. Vazquez has presented two original full-length dance theater works both commissioned by Performance Space 122 in New York City: Wrestling Ladies, for which she was awarded a Creative Capital Foundation Grant and Jerome Foundation Fellowship in 2003, and The Florida Project in 2001 for which she also received a Jerome Fellowship. Her shorter pieces have been presented at the Minneapolis Theater Garage, Community Exchange Center in Philadelphia, The Brooklyn Arts Exchange, Dixon Place, Galapagos Art Space, Tonic and HERE ARTS Center in New York City. Vazquez is a company member of Elevator Repair Service Theater Company cited as, “Best Experimental Theater Troupe” by New York Magazine. She has performed with the company since 1996 at many national and international venues & festivals including: PS 122, The Whitney@Philip Morris, On the Boards, (Seattle), Diverse Works (Houston), Walker Art Center (MN), The Wexner Center for the Arts (OH), Sommer Szene (Salzburg), the Holland Festival & Berliner Festwochen (Berlin). She has also appeared as an actor in the play Caveman by Richard Maxwell, which has performed at P.S. 122, SOHO Repertory Theater, the Festival D’Automne (Paris), Theaterformen (Hannover), Hau 2 (Berlin), and Ruhrfestpielhaus, (Recklinghausen). She has also collaborated as a performer with Forced Entertainment, a theater company from Sheffield U.K., in the work New Songs and Monologues, at Mousonturm (Frankfurt) in 2003 and The Voices, at LIFT, London (upcoming). She has also worked with many other NY based directors and choreographers including: Robert Cucuzza, Jim Findlay, Amy Huggans, Anna Kohler, Aaron Landsman, Johanna S. Meyer, Clarinda MacLow and Phil Soltanoff. Vazquez has taught many classes and workshops in theater and dance since 1999. She has taught as part of the Wooster Group’s Summer Theater Institute since its inception in 2000. She was an Annenberg Teaching Artist for Performance Space 122 from 2000 –2002 at Central Park East Elementary School, and a teacher for Arts America in many public schools in 2001. She has also taught workshops with Richard Maxwell and Elevator Repair Service at Free Street Theater Workshop (Chicago, IL), Ohio State University Theater Department (Columbus, OH), The Portland Institute of Contemporary Art, (Portland, OR), The Holland Festival, and the High School of Performing and Visual Arts in Houston, TX. Vazquez has a B. A., in Comparative Literature from Duke University and an AA in Theater from New World School of the Arts, Miami, FL.
