William Pope.L's Black Factory includes a labyrinth of narrow hallways, several closets, and three small rooms that serve as the installation’s main focus. In the first, a caretaker sits face-down at a table next to an African ritual mask; a puddle of green milk leaks from under his head. Next door, a machine grinds text and images from contemporary African American culture into "pulp." In the third room, the pulp is turned into items available for purchase, such as CDs of the installation soundtrack, artist’s books, and replicas of the pulp-making machine itself. This work offers an ironic take on the views of both Afrocentrists and neo-conservatives as a way of escaping narrow definitions of American blackness.

This webcast is an interactive online brochure for the Black Factory.
